I guess darkness serves a purpose: to show us that there is redemption through chaos. I believe in that. I think that’s the basis of Greek mythology.
Our grandkids will lead the lives of the gods of mythology. Zeus could think and move objects around. We’ll have that power. Venus had a perfect, timeless body. We’ll have that, too. Pegasus was a flying horse. We’ll be able to modify life in the future.
The thing about tourism is that the reality of a place is quite different from the mythology of it.
The deeper I go into mythology, the more I find. I originally did five ‘Percy Jackson’ books. I thought that would cover Greek mythology and I couldn’t have been more wrong. It’s ever-expanding.
I think that we need mythology. We need a bedrock of story and legend in order to live our lives coherently.
I think people should read fairy tales, because we’re hungry for a mythology that will speak to our fears.
Nepal is a beautiful country with a lot of holy places. I also like the country because it’s close to the Himalayas. According to Hindu mythology, that’s the abode of Lord Shiva.
There is nothing new, from Greek mythology to Shakespeare to every romcom ever made, we’re just reimagining the same 12 story plots over and over again – so what makes people keep watching and listening? It’s all about the character.
I think there’s a mythology that if you want to change the world, you have to be sainted, like Mother Teresa or Nelson Mandela or Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Ordinary people with lives that go up and down and around in circles can still contribute to change.
Vernon Fenwick. He’s a cameraman at Channel 6 – he’s April O’Neil’s cameraman – and Vernon is a character who is from the ‘Turtle’ mythology.
I love Pushkar because of the Pushkar Fair, which happens every fall – it’s this camel festival, with ornately-dressed camels, camel races. But the reason I truly love this city is the Hindu mythology behind it.
I never minded giving my opinions. They are just opinions, and I had studied music and I had strong feelings. I was happy for my opinions to join all the other opinions. But you have to be prepared for what comes back, especially if you don’t agree with the dominant mythology.
In mythology and palmistry, the left hand is called the dreamer because the ring finger on the left hand leads directly to the heart. I find it a very poetic idea. And that’s why I only wear nail polish on my left ring finger.
I’m really proud of being part of that whole geek/chic, girl nerds, glasses are sexy and all of that because I think it’s true. In America, I don’t know about in other places, but there is this mythology about the way a woman is supposed to be and look and act and that’s what makes them sexy. And I love being the alternative to that.
Hollywood grew to be the most flourishing factory of popular mythology since the Greeks.
In the story of Thetis and Achilles, it’s clear this isn’t really a safe environment. She’s gone down to the River Styx – the dead are being ferried across in the background. There’s something in this mythology that says that if you want invulnerability, if you want immortality, you pay a price.
Myth and mythology often serve constructive and aspirational purposes. But they also do harm.
For me, my mythology growing up was ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark’ and ‘Star Wars’ and ‘E.T.’ and ‘Ghostbusters.’ That’s what I grew up on, and there aren’t many people who can write that kind of scale of story, stories that are that big.
The connection between psychology, mythology, and literature is as important as the connection between psychology and biology and the hard sciences.
It is pure mythology that women cannot perform as well as men in science, engineering and mathematics. In my experience, the opposite is true: Women are often more adept and patient at untangling complex problems, multitasking, seeing the possibilities in new solutions and winning team support for collaborative action.
The point of mythology or myth is to point to the horizon and to point back to ourselves: This is who we are; this is where we came from; and this is where we’re going. And a lot of Western society over the last hundred years – the last 50 years really – has lost that. We have become rather aimless and wandering.
J. Michael Straczynski
The popular mythology of creative genius depends on beloved stereotypes of the artist in youth and old age: the misunderstood upstart who forces us to see the world afresh; and the revered sage who shows us depths of insight attainable only through a lifetime of hard-won experience.
In world mythology, there are countless examples of tragic characters whose greatest strength is also the source of their undoing. But the ancient Greeks and Romans also held the view that acceptance is the beginning of wisdom.
Simon Van Booy
I’ve come to the conclusion that mythology is really a form of archaeological psychology. Mythology gives you a sense of what a people believes, what they fear.
Of all the subjects on this planet, I think my parents would have been hard put to name one less useful than Greek mythology to securing the keys to an executive bathroom.
J. K. Rowling
In mythology, the Medusa can petrify people with a look – which is a good thing, I think. But the Medusa is a unique symbol – something strong. It’s about going all the way.
Superheroes fill a gap in the pop culture psyche, similar to the role of Greek mythology. There isn’t really anything else that does the job in modern terms. For me, Batman is the one that can most clearly be taken seriously.
Matangi’s mantra is aim, which is MIA backwards. She fights for freedom of speech and stands for truth, and lives in the ghetto because her dad was the first person in Hindu mythology who came from the ‘hood, but had gained enlightenment through not being a Brahmin.
Mythology is a subjective truth. Every culture imagines life a certain way.
Contrary to popular mythology, the best and most durable relationships are based not on vulnerability or passion but on a conjugation of positive attributes, a meeting of mind, body and soul that is all the more powerful as it is not weighed down with neediness and unreasonable expectation.
I stick closely to the structure of the myths. I may have some fun with the mythology by changing the environment to modern-day, but the structure of the myths, the monsters, the relationships of the gods – none of that is made up.
All your Western theologies, the whole mythology of them, are based on the concept of God as a senile delinquent.
The thing about playing gods, whether you’re playing Thor and Loki or Greco Roman gods or Indian gods or characters in any mythology, the reason that gods were invented was because they were basically larger versions of ourselves.
It’s no secret that I’ve always had an interest in mythology. Whether it’s Arthurian or ancient Greek or even Marvel universe. I’ve always connected with it on some level.
I was born to play Hercules. I have loved and honored the mythology over the years – since I was a kid. When I first broke into Hollywood, ‘Hercules’ was one of the movies that I – not chased, because I didn’t have the power to chase anything – but always had in the back of my mind.
If we don’t have a vigorous questioning, aggressive journalistic community and mythology, democracy itself is in great jeopardy.
I’m from New Orleans. There’s a lot of vampire mystique and mythology that resonates there, and I was fascinated by it. I always wanted to play one.
There’s something about the superheroes and the idea behind their relationship with humans, whether it’s a metaphor for the better part of ourselves, or the more flawed part of ourselves. So it seems to really be our own pop-culture version of Greek mythology.
‘Star Wars’ is mythology. It’s like Greek mythology or Shakespeare. It’s the story of good versus evil over a very long span of time. The storytelling is universal and timeless.
If science fiction is the mythology of modern technology, then its myth is tragic.
Ursula K. Le Guin
You’re basing your laws and your whole outlook on natural life on mythology. It won’t work. That’s why you have all these problems in the world. Name them: India, Pakistan, Ireland. Name them-all these problems. They’re all religious problems.
Norse mythology is mystifying and fantastic and totally confusing, but you can draw a lot of inspiration from it.
I know a little about Greek mythology. It’s not that far away from the Nordic mythology.
I go back and research, say, every reference to the Gorgons, and I find what the classical writers said about them and it’s so much richer than you might get in an average Greek mythology text. I feel like an archaeologist – I’m dusting off these things that people have not seen for thousands of years and bringing them into the modern world.
When we started in the early ’60s, football had a little bit of a tradition. But, they didn’t have a mythology. And NFL Films, through our music and our scripts and our photography, created a mythology for the sport.
Mythology is like a game of Chinese Whispers. What goes in at one end of the human circle is rarely what emerges at the other end.
It is not history, theology or mythology that interest me. It is the fact that history, theology or mythology could have alternative interpretations or explanations. I try to connect the dots between the past and the present.
As we were developing ‘Umbral’, and I was delving into the mythology and legends, I had a sudden realisation. ‘Wasteland’ is about people who fervently believe new myths and legends, but they turn out to be false; whereas ‘Umbral’ is about people who reject ancient myths and legends, but they turn out to be true!
‘Doctor Who’ was the first mythology that I learned, before ever I ran into Greek or Roman or Egyptian mythologies.
I have a bit of a love affair with fairy tales and some of the ideas of Irish mythology, like Oscar Wilde and W.B. Yeats, who captured a lot of that very beautifully.
A lot of stuff I was reading in mythology was about how women used to be taught to be wild. The wild woman was an essence that existed in the world. We’re still coming back from many years of us being chiseled out to be identical and quiet.
In the United States there’s a Puritan ethic and a mythology of success. He who is successful is good. In Latin countries, in Catholic countries, a successful person is a sinner.
Steve Jobs was rare: a C.E.O. who actually had a huge impact on his company’s fortunes. Contrary to corporate mythology, most C.E.O.s could be easily replaced, if not by your average Joe, then by your average executive vice-president. But Jobs genuinely earned the label of superstar.
I love reading all kinds of books. I usually have about ten books going at any one time – books about the past, the present, novels, non-fiction, poetry, mythology, religion, etc. Reading is my favorite thing to do.
Mary Pope Osborne
I took physics, and lo and behold, there’s a lot of physics in ‘Lost.’ I think for most people, liberal arts educations are more abstract, but for me, it’s been a chance to apply the things I’ve learned more directly. I also took some Folklore and Mythology classes, and I think that a lot of that influenced me.
My mother was religious; she was knowledgeable about mythology and scriptures; she could tell the metaphysical nuances and make the story come to life with their deeper significance. The current generation is missing out on this.
Vilayanur S. Ramachandran
The great universal literature has always had a tragic relation with freedom. The Greeks renounced absolute freedom and imposed order on chaotic mythology, like a tyrant.
The Victorian language of flowers began with the publication of ‘Le Language des Fleurs,’ written by Charlotte de Latour and printed in Paris in 1819. To create the book – which was a list of flowers and their meanings – de Latour gathered references to flower symbolism throughout poetry, ancient mythology, and even medicine.
The reigning mythology of the Northwest is obviously nature, and the reigning mythology of the Northeast corridor is culture.

When people hear the name ‘Marco Polo,’ they tend to think of a map or explorer. Very few people know the true story of Marco Polo, and it’s so much more compelling and exciting than the mythology.
For Mythology is the handmaid of literature; and literature is one of the best allies of virtue and promoters of happiness.
I was big into mythology when I was a kid – Arthurian legends and Greek mythology, that was kind of my passion. I hadn’t heard of the books, but I was told they were very popular amongst the kids, so I got a hold of them and read them. I totally got it!
I don’t look at it as writing a book in a videogame universe. I look at it as writing for ‘Halo’, which for me, transcends being just a great video game. It’s evolving into a whole new mythology.
I love all of mythology and rules pertaining to all of the monsters, but I like to go the extra step.
I am inclined to think that the realm of mythology is where the Yeti rightly belongs.
I walk the streets, take the train, it’s real simple. Some actors create their own mythology: ‘Oh, I’m so famous I can’t go places, because I created this mythology that I’m so famous I can’t go places.’
Samuel L. Jackson
I believe in mythology. I guess I share Joseph Campbell’s notion that a culture or society without mythology would die, and we’re close to that.
It did remind me of something out of Greek mythology – the richest king who gets everything he wants, but ultimately his family has a curse on it from the Gods.
Beyond Greek mythology, history just didn’t have a strong resonation with me.
A fiction about soft or easy deaths is part of the mythology of most diseases that are not considered shameful or demeaning.

I love the entire ‘Constantine’ mythology, the ‘Dead Man’ mythology, the Alex Holland ‘Swamp Thing’ mythology.
Guillermo del Toro
A lot of ink is given over to mythologizing female friendships as curious, fragile relationships that are always intensely fraught. Stop reading writing that encourages this mythology.
Comic-book movies are mythology, in a way, and there are a lot more parallels in them with what’s going on in the real world than people want to discuss.
Presumably all obsessions are extreme metaphors waiting to be born. That whole private mythology, in which I believe totally, is a collaboration between one’s conscious mind and those obsessions that, one by one, present themselves as stepping-stones.
J. G. Ballard
In families there is always the mythology. My father died when my kids were quite young still, and yet they still tell his stories. That is how a person lives on.
The reality is that I always envisioned the ‘Riddick’ franchise as a continuing mythology, so I always imagined that there would be many other films to follow.
‘Star Wars’ was the mythology of my youth. I longed for adventure.
I was definitely drawn to the mythology of one man, one voice, and one guitar.

Once you begin to explain or excuse all events on racial grounds, you begin to indulge in the perilous mythology of race.
James Earl Jones
I would never call myself a cancer survivor because I think it devalues those who do not survive. There’s this whole mythology that people bravely battle their cancer and then they become survivors. Well, the ones who don’t survive may be just as brave, you know, just as courageous, wonderful people.
The best description of the Old Testament that I heard was that it starts out as mythology, then it becomes legend, then it becomes history. In the mythological period – there is a distinct mythological period in the Old Testament, where the time spans are impossible and really just imagined.
I always point out to my Passover guests that the Hebrews were not living in isolation. They were at the crossroads of several great, elaborate cultures with their own mythology and religion and art and architecture and cultural belief. In fact, so many of the mythologies of the world describe the same events, just from different points of view.
I’m usually working on my own mythology, my own realm of created characters. Stories in mythology inspire me, though I may not be conscious of it.
I’m fascinated by almost any mythology that I can get my hands on.
In Greek mythology, Cassandra was given the gift of prophecy, except – due to her rejection of Apollo’s affections – nobody would ever believe her warnings.
In popular culture, when women compete, it’s usually over a man, and it’s usually very nasty. And that is just frankly not my experience. That’s just some kind of popular mythology, it feels like. I find it insulting.
Kelly Sue DeConnick
I don’t think working in superheroes is slumming it. I’m proud of this form. I like this. There’s nothing inherently masculine about power fantasies. There’s nothing inherently masculine about superhero comics. There’s nothing inherently masculine about mythology. About science fiction.
Kelly Sue DeConnick
‘The Lord of the Rings,’ published in the mid-1950s, was intended as a prehistory to our own world. It was perceived by Tolkien to be a small but significant episode in a vast alternate mythology constructed entirely out of his own imagination.
One of the things I’m trying to do over and over again in my books is create new mythologies, create new ways to understand the complexity of the world. I think what mythology does is impress upon chaotic experience the patterns, hierarchies and shapes which allow us to interpret the chaos and make fresh sense of it.
You don’t have to be a Fundamentalist Christian to be interested in the Bible. It’s really a fascinating mythology.
I’m really interested in mythology and folklore. I’m interested in moralities, why we’re here, faith… all of these bigger questions that I think we can place in films that allow us to question and give us a safe place to feel. Those types of questions can pop up in all sorts of different types of films – drama, comedy, action movie.
I love mythology and folklore, and I respect the time, money, and opportunity that a film gives to an audience. It’s a chance to empathize, reflect, and learn, so I really want to understand before I sign onto a project: ‘What’s the potential of this thing? What are we seeing and learning? What are we empathizing to?’
I think we have a great deal of mythology around writing. We believe that only a few people can really do it. I wrote a book called ‘The Right to Write.’ In it, I argued that all of us have the capacity to write. That it’s as normal to write as it is to speak.
There’s this mythology that parents are supposed to be parents 24/7 and are supposed to be completely fulfilled by their kids. That’s not the case. We need to make our own passions a priority.
So much of our mythology around money centers on the illusion that if we had ‘more,’ we would be more comfortable and more able to access our creativity. But creativity and prosperity are spiritual matters, not fiscal ones.
The mythology is that from chaos comes great work. I actually used to think that when I was younger, and I no longer think that anymore.
I had always been interested in mythology. I suppose my brief stay in Wales during World War II influenced my writing, too. It was an amazing country. It has marvelous castles and scenery.
From as far back as I can remember, I always loved the King Arthur stories, fairy tales, mythology – things like that. So it was very natural for me when I came to write the ‘Prydain’ books to sort of follow that direction.
For Gore 2000, I was a formal campaign adviser: contrary to RNC mythology, my brief was not ‘wardrobe,’ but rather policy on women’s issues, and messaging. I was also married to a Clinton speechwriter, and observed the message decision-making process from the perspective of a spouse.
If you look at the mythology of aliens, there’s a lot about gold. It’s about them coming for gold; whether that’s a simplification or not. If you think of ‘Chariot of the Gods,’ there’s this reoccurring theme of gold.
If you look at ‘The X-Files’ generally, we did 202 episodes. About 80% of them are not ‘mythology’ episodes, which tend to be the epic episodes. They deal with the big conspiracies, the search for Mulder’s sister. They deal with what I would call the ‘saga’ of ‘The X-Files.’
All of my work has been an effort to show that Christianity is superior and not just another mythology.
II know a little about Greek mythology. It’s not that far away from the Nordic mythology.
We insist on celebrating lone heroic path-finders, but even the most admired and the most successful inventors are part of a more remarkable supply chain of innovators who are largely ignored for the simpler mythology of one man or one eureka moment.
Do you know what a skin walker is? It’s a thing in Indian mythology. There are certain people born with this gift, and they’re able to actually get inside you and mess with your feelings and with your mind. And if a skin walker chooses to get a hold of you, there’s not much you can do.
Fracking has been used for more than 60 years to successfully drill over a million oil and gas wells in the U.S. Nonetheless, the prevailing mythology on the radical left is that the technology is ‘poisoning our children’ by polluting the water we drink and the air we breathe.
In my native Boulder County, Colorado, the fracking fanatics are out in force. They are marching door-to-door, petitions and mythology in hand, and they are storming city council and county commissioner meetings.
The mythology is that political change happens only in election years. The truth is you build from election to election.
As a reader with next to no knowledge of classical mythology, I approached ‘The Aeneid’ just as I would a contemporary poem or novel – and, despite my ignorance, I was rewarded with a rich and affecting portrait of, among other things, the memorably doomed love affair between Aeneas and Dido.
I’m not a fan of endless mystery in storytelling – I like to know where the mythology’s going; I like to get there in an exciting, fast-paced way – enough that there’s a really clear, aggressive direction to where it’s going, to pay off mystery and reward the audiences loyalty.
Every so often, you want to map out your plot mythology but never so specifically that you can’t let a story surprise you. You want to allow the type of action of the writer’s room so that you have the ability to take a left turn.
I believe that the Kane/Undertaker story, if you look at epic storytelling like Greek mythology, that is what it is. It is the best piece of epic storytelling that the WWE has ever done.
I’ve always been fascinated by mythology or, in modern parlance, by X-Men or vampires.
I didn’t study Greek mythology in school and I wish I had.
A James Bond film can be artistically fulfilling. Absolutely it can. It can be complex, and it can be interesting. I consider Bond movies to be an extension of popular theatre, a kind of modern mythology. You see the same sort of action in ‘Punch and Judy’ or in the folk theatre of various cultures, like ‘Grand Guignol.’
I love Norse mythology – Thor and Odin and Loki – amazing characters.
I’ve been reading Greek mythology since I was a kid. I also taught it when I was a sixth grade teacher, so I knew a lot of mythological monsters already. Sometimes I still use books and Web sites to research, though. Every time I research Greek mythology, I learn something new!
The Met is such a powerful place for me because it’s a natural connection between the ancient world and the modern world. And when you’re dealing with ancient mythology, trying to put a modern spin on it, you really can’t do much better than to call on the Met.
I’ve always hated superheroes. I cannot stand them. I love Norse mythology, but I hate superheroes. They ruined movies, then comics, and now games.

Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel
In the world of language, or in other words in the world of art and liberal education, religion necessarily appears as mythology or as Bible.
Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel
I’ve had it up to my ears with the personal mythology. It’s getting kind of personally sickening. The personal stuff just turns out to be misinterpreted. I’ve had such an earful for so long, it’s gotten tedious. I figure if you stay away from it, you’re safe.
Because of ignorance, I wasn’t a big fan of Marvel. I hadn’t read the magazines. They were not as big in Europe as they are in the United States. They’re more a part of modern American mythology. I know more about the original Thor than the Marvel Thor.
I think airports are places of huge human drama. The more I see of it, the more I am convinced that Heathrow is a secret city, with its own history, folklore and mythology. But what has surprised me is the love the people who work there feel for the place. Everyone seems to think they are plugged into something majestic.
Mythology and science both extend the scope of human beings. Like science and technology, mythology, as we shall see, is not about opting out of this world, but about enabling us to live more intensely within it.
I grew up being very interested in Greek mythology because my mum read to my sister and I.
I discovered Los Angeles in the late ’90s. The city was not at its best at the time, but I fell for it right away. There is something almost haunted about it, a vibrant mythology I find rather inspiring.
Mediaeval mythology, rich and gorgeous, is a compound like Corinthian brass, into which many pure ores have been fused, or it is a full turbid river drawn from numerous feeders, which had their sources in remote climes.
I have been watching how Indian women are forced to do certain things, as the stories of sacrifice and devotion in mythology demand from them. And then there are inspiring stories about women like the Rani of Jhansi that offer women refreshing role models.
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
I’ve always loved shows that combine both approaches – that have a mythology and a set of characters, whose stories develop and change, and where the relationships evolve and fracture.
Many of my projects are inspired by Indian mythology. We have read that in the ancient times, people could expand their body parts, extend arms – all of that reads like a dream. But all this can be done using technology based on simple solutions.
With ‘Wonder Woman,’ I did one story with Alex Ross, and I had a lot of fun doing it, but I don’t think I could do a ‘Wonder Woman’ book on a regular basis, because there’s so much history there and so much mythology and everything.
We’re all about pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps, et cetera – I think that’s a harmful mythology, that the choices that we make and the things that we do in our lives are not connected to anything else. So I’d like to help to debunk that.
The fun of writing established characters is that there’s a rich mythology to draw from – you get to play with toys you loved as a kid.
I just love rolling up my sleeves and doing research, and I especially love doing research on the origins of folklore and the origins of mythology.

NFL Films has had one continuous, creative vision for 47 years. These are timeless things; timeless stories that we capture just like people go back and read Greek mythology.
I have loved football as an almost mythic game since I was in the fourth grade. To me, the game wasn’t even grounded in reality. The uniform turned you into a warrior. Being on a team, the mythology of physical combat, the struggle against the elements, the narrative of the game.
Fact-checking can wreak havoc on Chinese political mythology.
I think that the mythology of Van Gogh’s life, and the beauty of his paintings, is unstoppable.

Part of debunking the mythology of filmmaking is that we tend to want to locate it often in one person. And it’s not one person. It’s a collective, and it is a collaboration.
I love mythology, grew up loving it. I’m a middle kid, big family, that’s the thing you did in the farm country. I lived in Iowa, I loved mythology. I don’t know, we’re like that.
It’s been a lot of fun from script to script to get inside the mythology of ‘Grimm.’ We’ve been given a lot of freedom to explore the mythology as well as the backstories and interpersonal connections of the characters.
If you’ve worked in a company for a long time, there’s a mythology that you know by heart, you don’t need to look it up to evoke. It’s there in your blood, as it were.
The idea of science fiction, mythology, and creating a world is my favourite thing. I do love the reality of dramas and playing that, but being able to start from scratch, to completely build the character and this world, I love that.
‘FlashForward’ is definitely not a sci-fi show. It doesn’t have the mythology of ‘Lost.’ We have one major event that happens that you are asked to buy into. After that, you’re dealing with very human ripple effects – how people deal with it and how they come to terms with it.
Sweden is still a very peaceful country to live in. I think that people in Britain have created this mythology about Sweden, that it’s a perfect democratic society full of erotically charged girls.
You have one big mythology in your favor: Everyone believes that you Europeans are impeccable. But I know you are jerks.
We read Greek and Norse mythology until it came out of our ears. And the Bible.
I still really love the world and the universe and the mythology of ‘Halo.’ If I was given control, I would really like to do that film. But that’s the problem. When something pre-exists, there’s this idea of my own interpretation versus 150 other people involved with the film’s interpretation of the same intellectual property.
We tried to approach this as though there’s never been a Superman movie before, but at the same time respecting the canon and mythology. There are the pillars that you have to respect, and I’m not about to break them. But it is fun for me to bend them and mess with them.
Mythology works… because Indians have been bred on myths.
Mythopoeia has taken off in the Indian diaspora because there has been a change in readership from a mature audience to a younger one. This lot has a desperate yearning to reconnect. They want to consume mythology but in a well-packaged and easily digestible way.

I’m obsessed with Greek mythology. My favorite goddess is Artemis. She’s strong and reminds me of Katniss, the heroine of ‘The Hunger Games.’
In this age of vampires, what I love about ‘True Blood’ the most is that it’s a post-modern take on it. ‘Sookie Stackhouse’ series author Charlaine Harris and ‘True Blood’ creator Alan Ball turned that whole mythology upside-down… It’s not just about vampires. It’s about a lot of different things.
As a boy, I found myself drawn to Arthurian legends, and then to Celtic mythology, and then further east into the mysticism of Asian religions.

Richard K. Morgan
I can say pretty confidently that I am not the right guy to do a superhero movie, just because I was not a comic book kid. I don’t know that mythology, and I don’t have it ingrained in me in the way that a lot of these other directors do.

Rob Van Dam
Co-writing the ‘True Blood’ comic is a dream come true both as a performer on the show and as longtime comic fan. It’s a real privilege to build on the rapidly growing ‘True Blood’ mythology.
I think – since I was about 7 years old – that was when I was first introduced to the comics called ‘Amar Chitra Katha’ that are published in India. They’re not about a superhero, but they encompass all the stories of India, the folklore, the mythology, everything. But most of these stories are about Indian historical figures.

I grew up as a Christian, and one of the many things in Christian mythology that did not dovetail with real life is that human beings are not monochromatic in their being.

Understand me, Hollywood miniseries are very popular in England. But British miniseries make a tremendous mark on the national consciousness. They become part of the national culture and mythology… at least for a time.
I’m only interested in science fiction that’s used as a literary device, a shortcut into something more exploratory or universal about our experience. That’s why I think it was invented and why mythology was invented; it’s a tool, not an end to itself.
Even the greatest mathematicians, the ones that we would put into our mythology of great mathematicians, had to do a great deal of leg work in order to get to the solution in the end.
There is this mythology that says that when people are born, their brains are essentially fixed very early on and they’re not able to change their connections. I was aware that was a myth and that people could learn new skills.
I’m quite proud of growing up in New Zealand where, from quite early on in primary school, you’re learning to count in Maori, Maori mythology and dances and colours and history, and I think that gives a child a really good grounding.
I was way into ‘Voltron,’ Ray Harryhausen: anything with giant monsters, I was really into. Even dinosaurs – for a while, I wanted to be a paleontologist. So it’s almost like primal, ancestral mythology to me, this fascination with monsters.
When we think of the myth of the settling of the West, this is our creation myth. But because we think of it as mythology, not as real people interacting with other real people, we ignore the cost of human lives and blood.
What I took away from my ‘Flashforward’ experience is that when you’re doing a serialized mythology show, you put your foot on the gas, and you do not take it off.
It’s ‘Star Trek!’ It’s as close to an American mythology as we get. To be a part of that storytelling after being a fan since I was a teenage boy who saw the pilot episode of ‘Next Generation’ air, it’s all very surreal.
I get a lot of inspiration from research in mythology and folklore. I find that, you know, stories people told each other thousands of years ago are still relevant now.
There’s never been a ‘girl wonder’ mythology.
The stuff that I learned on ‘Sons,’ the education of how to tell stories, was part of that mythology. It’s hard to look at it and go, ‘Oh, if I knew this, I would have done it this way,’ because the fact is I like to think that all that sort of unraveled as it was supposed to.
Here’s the deal with ‘Bastard.’ I loved that show, and for me, it was such a palate cleanser, going from writing urban vernacular and crime to, essentially, iambic pentameter. I loved the mythology of that world based on history, but what it came down to was money.
I’m really proud of all the stuff we’ve built with Green Lantern – from Larfleeze to the different corps. The universe has expanded and will live well past my run. It was more than just telling another story, but really giving back to the character by expanding and adding to their mythology.
In general, I have a lot of issues with the mythology of the founder.
I do love mythology.
Jamie Campbell Bower
In our national mythology, we seem to include only one-way migrations to the great capitol cities. The journey from the small Wisconsin town or Minnesota city to Chicago or New York or Los Angeles. Certainly for some people, that journey is a round trip.
Many of us view the bible and other religious teachings as mythology.
To us, basing stories on christianity is the same as basing stories on Roman mythology, Native American folklore, or unsubstantiated government conspiracies.
I love Westerns. They’re a unique creation of American mythology.
If you look at the great Westerns, and at Greek, Roman, and Norse mythology, they all contain elements in common: a harsh landscape; demons or outlaws trying to stop or kill the protagonist; and there are mythical legends at their core, innate in all cultures.
My brothers were the ones who taught me about mythology and storytelling, and showed me how to do stop-motion animation.
Geoffrey S. Fletcher
There is no simple answer for what it means to be Canadian. There are a thousand answers that come together. But part of that is that there is a national mythology.
At a young age, when I was fascinated with China, I read ‘The Travels of Marco Polo’ and learned about this exciting, dramatic world he captured and reported on. He’s so little known, but yet this mythology has survived that’s so misrepresentative of his story.
I grew up partially around Stone Mountain, Georgia, and in that part of the country, there was always this aura of mythology and palpable sense of otherness about being a Southerner.
The fun of superhero comics is finding ways to turn the pieces that you know so that they’re suddenly about things that you want them to be about, as long as they’re true to the core and true to the DNA of the mythology.
I think the art world is one of the last bastions of this kind of sexism where there is a mythology about a woman not being able to be both and artist and a mother: that some very important creative crystal inside a woman would be shattered by the idea of having a child.
I used to like Norse mythology, Greek mythology, Egyptian mythology. All mythology!
Unfortunately, a lot of the concepts in the Bible are based on ancient mythology that doesn’t fit the findings of science.
The mammoth was basically done in by climate change. The last ones survived on Wrangel Island, north of Chukotka, until 3,700 years ago. According to Eveny mythology, mammoths scooped up dirt with their tusks to form the first dry land.
Storytelling, mythology and film provide a lot of hope but, on the flip side, can also create delusion.
Irish mythology is gorgeous, and so are the fairies, but they are very misrepresented in the U.K. They are not little creatures with wings.
I think it’s really hard to draw a hard-and-fast line and say ‘Grimm’s Fairy Tales’ doesn’t count as science fiction or fantasy. Or at what point do we say mythology is not fantasy, so reading mythology when you’re young does not count as an exposure to fantasy?
Science and mythology were the topics which fascinated me since my early childhood.
I like mythology – anything historical.
If no other knowledge deserves to be called useful but that which helps to enlarge our possessions or to raise our station in society, then Mythology has no claim to the appellation.
Thus we hope to teach mythology not as a study, but as a relaxation from study; to give our work the charm of a story-book, yet by means of it to impart a knowledge of an important branch of education.
Without a knowledge of mythology much of the elegant literature of our own language cannot be understood and appreciated.
Even befor doing this film, I’ve always been interested in mythology.
In all the antique religions, mythology takes the place of dogma; that is, the sacred lore of priests and people… and these stories afford the only explanation that is offered of the precepts of religion and the prescribed rules of ritual.
William Robertson Smith
But, strictly speaking, this mythology was no essential part of ancient religion, for it had no sacred sanction and no binding force on the worshippers.
William Robertson Smith
This being so, it follows that mythology ought not to take the prominent place that is too often assigned to it in the scientific study of ancient faiths.
William Robertson Smith
Actually, I love mythology. When I was a kid I was obsessed with myth and I wanted to be a mythologist when I grew up. Then I realized I really just like stories.
I’m such a geek, I know all about mythology and I don’t know Marc Jacobs.
My college roommate gave me her copy of ‘Lord of the Rings,’ and I read that probably five or six times – not because I think it’s the greatest thing ever written, though some people certainly think it is – but the world he creates is so vivid. So real that he designed its own languages, history and mythology.
What was important for ‘Legacies’ to actually be a successful show is that we had to introduce new mythology.
Danielle Rose Russell
There’s a ton of stuff in mythology and folklore that is loaded with wonderful creatures that I haven’t drawn yet, but that’s kind of my retirement plan. Theoretically, I won’t be doing comics any longer, and I’ll just be drawing and painting whatever the hell I want. Most of that will be monsters.
Every time we revise our history, we also revise the mythology of our history.
Laura Anne Gilman
In Greek mythology, the hero wants to be great, but the very concept does not exist in the Indian vocabulary. Yet it has become the global template. And it’s a template that won’t fit in India.
Medical training taught me the art of breaking down the complex maze of stories, symbols and rituals into clear systems. You could say that it helped me figure out the anatomy and physiology of mythology and its relevance in a society more incisively. How is it that no society can, or does, exist without them?
Mythology is a vast body of knowledge that has not been tapped.
Italian cameramen grow up immersed in an awareness of light. It is part of their mythology.
I’ve loved fairytales, folklore and mythology since I was a small child, and I think it was inevitable that they would influence my style and my development of stories.
Studios are so used to digital now, and there is a mythology that it’s cheaper. But it’s really not cheaper. For instance, digital is great for night exteriors; everybody knows it’s a video tap, so it’s very responsive to light. So you can go out at night, shoot with digital, and it’s gorgeous, beautiful to look at.
Nobody in America, in the modern generation, has read their mythology or legends.
When they first cast me, I was a pretty avid fan and vampire movies and Celtic mythology, so I was excited to get a chance to walk in Doyle’s shoes and have fun with it.
That religious earnestness forever tends toward fright and hence towards brittleness and inquisition is clear enough in mythology and history.
I definitely read a lot of books on the psychology and mythology behind fairy tales because I think that’s really fascinating and there’s a lot to draw on there.
‘Trolls’ was a blank slate – there was no world, no mythology. We talked a lot about the Grinch and we liked how they showed his heart growing, but how do you show a photographable device like that for the Bergens? We ended up using color for a lot of that: desaturating and then pulling the saturation up.
It seems obvious to me that the notion of God has never been anything but a kind of ideal projection, a reflection upward of the human personality, and that theology never has been and never can be anything but a more and more purified mythology.
